Implementation of EU Values, Policies and Standards in Local Communities

As part of the process of Serbia's integration to the European Union, Center for Democracy has launched the project Implementation of EU Values, Policies and Standards in Local Communities. After signing the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the EU, Serbia has an obligation to implement reforms through the harmonization of national legislation with that of the European Union's common law, and the direct influence will be seen mainly on the local level through a better standard of living for the citizens. As we are committed to balanced regional development, Center for Democracy has decided to organize this project in Pomoravski and Rasinski counties in central Serbia. The goal of this project is to promote a better understanding of the process of European integration, as well as more efficient enforcement of European values, policies and standards, mainly in the areas of consumer protection, enviroment, and safety of food products.
One of the main project activities will be the formation of a network of key stakeholders from the political, economic and social speheres in the local community, which will be fully qualified to continue promoting new policies and standards in order to increase our citizens' quality of life. Members of the network will include members of the local authorities, NGOs, businesspeople and farmers, all promoting intersectoral cooperation. Center for Democracy will organize programs of trainings in Pomoravski and Rasinski counties, public debates, as well as a one-day conference. The project will be implemented with our associates from Ambassadors of the Environment, Association of Consumers and Agromreza, experts from organizations which are directly involved in the areas covered in this project. If you wish to apply for the training programs in Pomoravski and Rasinski counties, you can download the form and send it via e-mail to info@centaronline.org.

Women, Employment and Poverty

Center for Democracy has started the project Women, Employment and Poverty, with the support of the UNDP office in Serbia, and within the Cluster for Inclusive Development. The goal of this project is to increase the capacities for women's employment in local communities by promoting cooperation among key stakeholders in planning, creating and implementing a program for improving the competitiveness of women and securing more opportunities for them in the workplace. This project will be carried out with the support of a network of local civil society organisations (CSOs) which, through training programs and public advocacy, will be in the position to be active in decreasing poverty and unemployment. We will conduct meetings with key members of the private sector in local communities with the aim to raise the awareness of corporate social responsibility, as well as organize roundtables on the subject of Women, Employment and Poverty.
The project will be implemented in Nis, Pirot, Kraljevo, Velika Plana and Paracin, where we plan to organize a two-day workshop for the network of local CSO members. We also plan to organize a one-day conference in Belgrade, where we will gather the representatives of business, government and the civil sector on the national level, in order to work together in implementing regional poverty reduction programs, with a particular emphasis on women's employment measures.

Consumer Protection in Serbia
Center for Democracy organized the 12th debate, Consumer Protection in Serbia, within the project Democratic Political Forum, on October 6, 2008 at the National Bank of Serbia.
Center for Democracy considers consumer protection to be one of the major topics within Serbia's effort to join the EU. This is a democratic issue because it is in the consumers' best interest to be in a position and to have an opportunity to monitor manufacturers and retailers in order to ensure quality products and good values.
Organizing consumers, creating a legal framework for consumer action and cooperating with key state institiutions are essential for the development of a market economy and creating conditions for real market competition. For these reasons, Center for Democracy strongly believes that this topic should receive greater attention in our political and business public, as well as encourage citizens to come together and defend their interests as consumers. Introductory remarks were given by Ljiljana Stanković, Deputy Minister of Trade, and Edina Popov, from the Consumers Association of Serbia. The moderator was Misa Stojiljković, B92 journalist.

The project is supported by Friedrich Ebert Foundation, Olof Palme International and US Democracy Commission.

Partnership for Success
Center for Democracy participated in the fair for non-profit ideas, Partnership for Success, which was organized by Smart Kolektiv and Pontis Foundation, in cooperation with the Deputy Prime Minister's team for the implementation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy and US Chamber of Commerce. This is the first fair of its kind, in which civil society organizations exhibited their projects and activities to the business sector, while representatives of the business sector had an opportunity to find suitable partners for carrying out their corporate programs for social responsibility. Center for Democracy's stand was very busy as representatives of the business sector had a chance to familiarize themselves with our current projects including Implementation of European Values, Policies and Standards in Local Communities, More Quickly and Easily to a Job, Women, Employment and Poverty, and Democratic Political Forum.
The fair for non-profit ideas Partnership for Success was organized on Monday, 29th September 2008 in Telenor's Expo Intro Center, in Airport City, Belgrade.

More Quickly and Easily to a Job
Center for Democracy, in cooperation with Vip mobile, has launched the project " More Quickly and Easily to a Job". The goal of the project is to provide employment training possibilities for young women in Nis. The training will focus on three practical areas: Basic Business Skills, Customer Service Training, and Job Search Skills, and is open to young women between the ages of 18-30 who would like to enhance their skills for becoming employed in the thriving customer service sector. At the June 17th press conference at the Chamber of Commerce in Nis to promote the start of the project, representatives of CDF and Vip mobile highlighted the necessity of offering such programs to young women. Women are particularly vulnerable to becoming unemployed, as described in the Government's Poverty Reduction Strategy Poverty Reduction Strategy report: 53.6% of the registered unemployed are women, with even higher rates of unemployment for those under the age of 30. CDF is pleased to partner with Vip for this project. Vip mobile is the biggest greenfield investor in Serbia and, since its arrival in Serbia, has launched a number of socially responsible projects aimed at young people. " More Quickly and Easily to a Job", training young women in Nis, demonstrates not only our commitment to increasing women's employment, but our business-NGO partnership also highlights how business and civil society can work together to promote regional development in southern Serbia.
