CDF: Stopping violence against women in Serbia

Women in Serbia are exposed to drastic gender-based violence. This is evidenced by overwhelming data which states that since the start of 2023, 9 women have been murdered and in 2022, 27 women were murdered as a result of femicide.

In response to International Women’s Day, the Center for Democracy Foundation warns of the violence, discrimination and inequality the women of Serbia are exposed to and offers its support to civil society organisations in establishing mechanisms to combat femicide and the urgent response of the competent institutions in preventing violence against women and girls.

Women face various forms of abuse from both partners and non-partners. According to relevant data, as many as 21.6% of women have been exposed to some form of psychological, physical (including threats) or sexual violence from a partner (Survey on the Safety and Quality of Life of Women, Statistical Office of the RS/Eurostat).

Let us remember that the economic empowerment of women is the foundation upon which gender equality is achieved, as are sustainable development and the achievement of vital synergy with the EU integration process.

Along with the appropriate institutional and legal framework, it is important to ensure effective implementation in the achievement of true gender equality. In Serbia, patriarchal stereotypes regarding the roles, responsibilities and expected behaviours of women and men in society and in the family continue to prevail. This requires the increased efforts of all actors in raising awareness concerning gender stereotypes.

It is necessary to introduce gender perspective in all public policy and at all levels of government, as well as to increase the participation of the citizenry and civil societies in public policy dialogue vital to combatting discrimination, social exclusion of vulnerable groups and gender equality.
