Freedom of Expression and Assembly for Students Must Not Be Undermined
National Convention on the European Union (NCEU)
The National Convention on the European Union (NCEU) expresses its support for students across Serbia who, through marches and blockades of their universities, are voicing their concerns over the tragic loss of 15 lives in the collapse of a shelter at the railway station in Novi Sad, as well as their dissatisfaction with the response of institutions to this incident.
The NCEU particularly supports the students’ demand that institutions, in accordance with their constitutional and legal responsibilities, approach this case with accountability and transparency, thoroughly establishing the facts and responsibilities involved. This would demonstrate a genuine commitment to fully upholding the principles of the rule of law in Serbia. Simultaneously, the NCEU reiterates its call for all relevant judicial authorities to regularly and responsibly inform the public of the actions they are taking in relation to this case.
The NCEU reminds all state and societal actors that the rights to freedom of expression and assembly are fundamental human rights. Serbia has committed to respecting these rights by ratifying numerous international conventions and through its declared commitment to membership in the European Union.
