Crisis of Democracy Reveals Citizens’ Loss of Trust in Democratic Institutions

Nataša Vučković, TV Nova S

The crisis of democracy reveals that citizens across the world are losing trust in institutions that were once seen as credible pillars of democracy—first and foremost, the parliament, stated Nataša Vučković, Secretary General of the Center for Democracy Foundation, during an appearance on TV Nova S’s morning programme.

“Citizens are losing confidence that their elected representatives are genuinely working in the public interest. Many believe that the needs of different social groups and segments of society are often neglected, and that decisions are largely made in the interest of those with the greatest influence over the political process,” said Vučković.

“The fight for democracy is constant,” said Nataša Vučković, adding that what students in Serbia are doing today has come as a major surprise to many—particularly because this generation, often seen as absorbed in new technologies, was perceived as detached. Yet, it has proven capable of making a significant contribution on the path toward democracy.

“Students understand teamwork. Their dedication to the goals they have set and their persistence is truly impressive,” Vučković noted.

She also underlined the importance of maintaining a pro-European narrative in Serbia, despite global developments and shifting political dynamics.
