International Day of Democracy: Citizens of Serbia for Freedom and the Rule of Law
Statement of the Center for Democracy Foundation on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy
Citizens of Serbia have shown that they want a democratic and orderly society
The Center for Democracy Foundation congratulates the citizens of Serbia on the International Day of Democracy and expresses its support for efforts to build a modern, democratic, and orderly society in which the rights and dignity of all are respected.
We believe that Serbia urgently needs genuine reforms and transformations of the state and society in order to approximate the standards of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law that exist in the developed countries of the European Union.
We stand for a society in which there is no place for violence and where all citizens feel protected and safe. To achieve this, we need functional democratic institutions, respect for human rights, strengthening of independent institutions, the fight against corruption, media freedom, the advancement of parliamentarism, and a democratic political culture.
We support the consistent demands of citizens, the academic community, and civil society for strengthening democratic institutions and democratic oversight of the executive branch. It is of crucial importance that citizens are able to freely express their opinions, participate in decision-making processes in their communities, and elect their representatives in free and fair elections.
Since its founding more than 30 years ago, the Center for Democracy Foundation has been dedicated to the development of democracy and the rule of law, the promotion of European values, the strengthening of democratic institutions and procedures, and the advancement and protection of human rights and civil liberties.
