The eradication of poverty must be a priority of the state and society

CDF Announcement Ahead of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Every fifth person in Serbia is at risk of poverty, and 28.1% of the population is living in ‘at risk of poverty’ or social exclusion, according to the latest data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia.

The eradication of poverty is Sustainable Development Goal number 1 of the UN’s 2030 Agenda, to which the Republic of Serbia is committed, implying the application of one of its key principles - ‘Leave No One Behind’.

The severe economic situation, inflation, and particularly the surge in food and energy prices have disproportionately affected the poorer segments of the population. In Serbia, almost nine out of 10 households (88.6%) struggle to make ends meet.

One-off assistance measures for certain population categories and reducing the cost of certain items in stores are not adequate responses to the significant decline in the standard of living for the people of Serbia. There is a need to systemically improve social and tax policies to ensure necessary support and protect those most vulnerable from poverty.

The UN 2030 Agenda envisions the eradication of extreme poverty, halving the number of people living in any form of poverty, and reducing the risk of poverty for those belonging to the most vulnerable groups. This requires the more responsible, accessible, and transparent distribution of social assistance to identify the needs of those who are excluded, yet in need of support.
